Impressions of the 2011 High Park Raptor Watch

The 2011 High Park Raptor Watch was notable for the very few days during which favourable north-west winds and a rising barometric reading were present.
The exception were the two days of September 15 and 16, when medium north-west winds brought in Broad-winged Hawk numbers of 1564 and 7060 respectively. These were not record daily numbers for the species but it brought levels of migrating hawks similar to the averages during the 1994 to 2003 decade.
Turkey Vultures maintained their 2009 and 2010 numbers but well above the 1994-2008 decade level. the spectacular fliers made their on-time appearance on October 1 and continued in singles and doubles until November 23.
All of the other raptors species appeared over High Park in smaller numbers than in previous years. The three Buteos: Red-tailed, Red-shouldered and Rough-legged came through in disappointing numbers compare to the 1994 2010 time period.
The grassland raptor spedies including Northern Harrier and American Kestrel continues their annual decline.
Sharp-shinned Hawks were lower in numbers than in any previous year of observations.
High Park continues to be a great place to observe diurnal raptor migration with modest numbers compared to sites further south but providing easy access and comfortable friendly facilities. The contributions of the many counters, observers and visitors made 2011 an enjoyable year. The 2011 High Park results will also be published on the TOC website and in the Hawk Migration Association of North America Journal, Fall Edition.
